CD Reviews

Fine album geared toward the casual fan

"Best Of Nat King Cole is a budget priced CD that gives us just a few great tunes by the immortal Nat King Cole. This is an excellent album for the casual fan or someone who wants to find out if Nat King Cole is for them. The sound quality is excellent; and I like the artwork as well.

"Unforgettable" starts off the CD with a lush musical arrangement--but Nat's singing remains squarely in the spotlight. Nat sings this with panache; I love it! It's pure gold in Nat's capable hands. "Ramblin' Rose" is yet another huge classic hit for Nat; he sings this with all his heart and soul. The strings in the arrangement help the melody along; and Nat never misses a note! Great!

"A Blossom Fell" is a tender ballad about a man who may not have a girlfriend who can return his love; this torchy love ballad gets the royal treatment from Nat King Cole and he sings this beautifully!

"Mona Lisa" is another Nat King Cole masterpiece; I always smile whenever I hear this tune by Nat. Nat King Cole captures the mystery element about this very famous painting and he sings this flawlessly. "Walkin' My Baby Back Home" has a bouncy, upbeat flavor to it; Nat's voice is in excellent form and the musical arrangement at times sounds like a subdued big band style.

"(I Love You) For Sentimental Reasons" is a stunning love ballad sung perfectly here by Nat; the arrangement lacks nothing--it's THAT good. I love that piano! Nat performs "(I Love You) For Sentimental Reasons" with great sensitivity--if you don't like this, check your pulse!

"The Sand And The Sea" ends the album with a wonderful ballad sung by Nat who doesn't sing a superfluous note.

Overall, this is a great Nat King Cole CD; but established fans of Nat King Cole will probably have these tunes in their collections already. I highly recommend this CD especially for newcomers to Nat King Cole's artistry and people who want just a brief overview of Nat's genius.
