CD Reviews

Worth the price for the title track alone

"Of the songs on this album, "Old Love" is definitely the standout. This is one you'll rewind and play over and over until you have it memorized. My parents just celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary, and we couldn't think of a more fitting song to sing after they renewed their vows. It's quiet, straight forward, and nearly perfect. It still makes me cry every time I hear or sing it. Unfortunately, sheet music has not been published for this, or any, of their songs. If you want to play 'em yourself, you'll have to skull out the chords or hound Red House Records until they convince Neal & Leandra to publish it already! The rest of the songs are ok, but pale in comparison to the beautiful title track. "Hopelessly Square" is a funky tune, and most of us recognize ourselves or someone we love in the lyrics. "This Garden Will Grow" is a fun, singable tune written about an elderly neighbor and friend, who has since passed away. I've had the pleasure of hearing Neal & Leandra at their annual concert at the Lake Harriet band shell in Minneapolis (where they live when not touring), and each year they sing "This Garden Will Grow" in memory of her. There are better Neal & Leandra albums out there, but the title track makes this one a must-have. If you're unsure about committing the funds, check it out from your local library first. I'm guessing you'll decide to buy it."
