A window into a missing piece of Trio history

(5 out of 5 stars)

"This CD is the first release anywhere for all but one of the 11 tracks, and the other track (Nellie) only appeared on the hard to find "The World Needs a Melody" on Longines Symphonette. This group was not your traditional Kingston Trio, but with Bob Shane at the helm it didn't stray too far from that legacy. Some of the tracks seem rough cut or poorly edited (the opening of You're the One comes to mind) while others are downright spectacular for their genre, with a couple of throwaway tunes in there, just like most Kingston Trio albums. I'm On My Way Back Home also appeared (different performance of the same arrangement) on the VERY elusive "Try to Remember" Japan-only LP, both sung by Jim Connor. Pat Horine, the other of that trio, handles the softer, more romantic ballads, while every so often the husky voice of Bob Shane shows up like an old friend. Pretty good stuff, and it grows on you! Buy it! Then sell me a copy of "Try to Remember!!!!!" Release that one, somebody!"
