Newsboys, like contemporaries Michael W. Smith and Third Day, have always had a strong worship component to their brand of slightly eclectic Christian pop. Given the band?s vertical focus that makes Adoration: The Worship Album a logical extension to their growing catalogue of music. As evidenced by the success of "It Is You" (from 2002's Thrive and also featured live on this release), singer/frontman Peter Furler and gang know how to craft a melodic yet simple song of praise. The first single, "He Reigns," mirrors that infectious groove. Other highlights include a powerful original track, "Great Is Your Faithfulness," a credible cover of the worship fave "You Are My King (Amazing Love)," and the majestic closer "Hallelujah." The band also combines its trademark pop sensibilities with Anglican tradition in the strangely familiar sounding "In Christ Alone," marrying sound of the old and new. Adoration will do little to detract from the fine musical litany this talented band has written in more than a decade. --Michael Lyttle

CD Reviews

Amazing as usual--as good as Thrive!

"The Newsboys have been my favorite band for a long time (even through their lower times like Love Liberty Disco), and the reason is albums like this. Every song on this CD is worth listening to over and over again. Their version of "Amazing Love" is one of the best I've ever heard, and all the original music is great too, especially "Adoration" and the live versions of two songs from Thrive, "Lord (I Don't Know)" and "It Is You". An added bonus is that in the booklet where the words are printed, many of the songs also have the guitar chords so that you can play them!
I had the privilege to meet Peter Furler earlier this year, and was touched by his commitment to worshipping God and not just playing awesome music. That commitment on the part of all the Newsboys definitely comes through on Adoration!"
"Adoration" is something to be adored.

"The latest Newsboys album "Adoration" is the band's very first Praise and Worship project. I must admit that upon the very first listen, I considered it a disappointment. The original press release for the album stated that it was going to be a 12-song album, close to an hour of music with all the tracks crossfaded to sound like one continuous piece of music. However, once the album came out, it was the opposite. What we have here is a 10-song album, 42-minutes of music and with the exception of the two live cuts, there are no crossfades to bridge the tracks.
All gripes aside, this album is fabulous and demonstrates that The Newsboys are not only a great rock band, they are also a great Praise band as well. "He Reigns" is the album's opening track and features a catchy singalong chorus and great backup vocals from a Gospel choir. "You Are My King" is fast becoming a Praise and Worship standard. The Newsboys version of this song is stunning and heartfelt. "Great Is Your Faithfulness" is very similar to band's like U2 or Delirious. Lead singer Peter Furler goes completely out like Bono towards the end of this track. "Take My Hands" is a remake of the song "Praises" from the 'Boys "Shine-The Hits" album. This new version has a stomping early '80s dance feel to it. It's quite similar to bands like ABC. The album's title track is another catchy gospel-tinged number with a children's chorus singing backup. This is a song that will have you raising your hands in 'adoration' in no time. "In Christ Alone" is another praise song that is quickly making its way into Worship sets in churches as of late. The Newsboys version has a beautiful piano line and some great vocals from Peter Furler. The two live tracks "Lord" and "It Is You" are originally from the band's previous album "Thrive". Both were recorded at The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cincinati, Ohio. Once again, the band features a rock-solid Gospel choir on backing vocals. "It Is You" dissolves into an singalong as the band leaves the stage and the audience continues to sing the 'holy holy' chorus to a programmed drumbeat. "Father, Blessed Father" is another beautiful Peter Furler original which leads into a refrain of the Newsboys oldie "Breathe". This is another Gospel flavored track in the style of "He Reigns". Finally, the album closes with "Hallelujah". This is a different song than the one of the same name on the "Step Up To The Microphone" album. This piece is short but has a powerful hopeful message in its lyrics. A perfect closer to a fabulous album.
The Newsboys continue to get better with each album they do. "Adoration" is no exception. Although it seems like so many Christian artists are jumping on a Worship bandwagon these days, it's different with the Newsboys. They sing and play openly and honestly from their hearts on this album. The musicianship is great and so are the lyrics. Once you hear "Adoration", you'll be playing it over and over again."

"I have been a Newsboys fan since "Not Ashamed" came out when I was in high school. When I first heard that the Newsboys would be doing a worship album, I wasn't sure if it would be interested in it. (I don't usually care for worship CD's). I am actually glad that I purchased this one; it may be their best album yet.The Newsboys stay true to their history by writing lyrics with incredible depth and power. (In fact, this album may have some of their best writing yet). Although many of the songs are slower than their previous albums, still feels as powerful as "Hallelujah" from Step up to the Microphone or "Million Pieces" from Thrive. If you liked "I Can Only Imagine" by Mercy Me (or if you are a fan of anything the NB have done in the past) you'll love this album. After buying it, check out my personal favorites: "In Christ Alone" (for the lyrics), "He Reigns" (for the catchiness), and "Amazing Love" (for pure worship)."
