CD ReviewsSo Much Better Than Descent Into Chaos Lumazu | California | 06/27/2005 (4 out of 5 stars) "This album makes it seem like Gus G. had a brain fart for his next project. I saw one reviewer for Descent say that the riffs reminded him of Arch Enemy. Well, that's true...for Sweet Vengeance. The tracks are kind of boring on Descent, and the guitarwork just does not vary as much as it does on this one.
I'm not a fan of Englund's singing style, nor am I fan of Lindberg. I could have done without Englund's presence on this album entirely, but luckily he does not get that annoying except on "Circle of Pain". Luckily, Gus G. and, yes, Lindberg save this track. Lindberg is necessary for this album. He doesn't sound very good on Descent, but he has never sounded better than he does on Sweet Vengeance. His vocals just fit here. And the guitarwork is interesting enough that you can just ignore him most of the time anyway if you want to. Highlights on this album include the absolutely magnificent "The Glow of the Setting Sun", "Elusive Emotion", and "Ethereal". I don't really like "The Tremor" much for some reason...I think Gus G. is capable of so much more than that. But all in all, this is worth your time and money. Considering Descent is more expensive, this would definitely be the right choice between the two." |
