Great selection of Oaks hits

"While this set does not match the brilliance of the first volume (which I reviewed long ago), it has much to offer and I am surprised that it is out of print, given the poor choice of alternative compilations. Compared to the first volume, this set is more pop country although it includes Beautiful you, a song that could have been included in the first volume.



The biggest here is, of course, Elvira. Prolific songwriter Dallas Frazier had written this song some years previously - I remember hearing a version by Kenny Rogers and the First edition, though I don't know if they were the first to record it - but it took the Oaks to make the song a big success.



Thank God for kids (written by Eddy Raven) is taken from their first Christmas album. It's not my favorite song from that album (that would be Christmas is painting the town) but it is one of many great songs on one of the finest Christmas albums I've heard (and I've heard a lot).



There are many other fine songs here, recorded between 1981 and 1984. My favorites among those not already mentioned are Fancy free, American made, I guess it never hurts to hurt sometimes and Ozark mountain jubilee. One notable omission from this period is Bobbie Sue, which later appeared on volume three.



One day, I hope that a truly definitive hits collection of Oaks music is released. Until such time, this set (if you can find it) and the first volume (still in print) contain most of the essentials. Volume three (out of print) is less consistent but its most important track, Bobbie Sue, is available elsewhere."

A great example of the Oaks' peak!

"This album showcases the Oaks at their peak in the mid-80's. It features such favorites as "Love Song," "American Made," and the touching "Thank God For Kids," as well as their signature tune, "Elvira." It also features the previously-unreleased songs "Everyday" and "Make My Life With You." It's a definite must for any Oak Ridge Boys fan (or any fan of country music as a whole!)."
