Bolivia's best kept secret is out!

Until now, the only way to hear this top-notch indie rock band was to climb up to Bolivia's capital, at 13,000 feet above sea level, to hear them play live at a pub, or to buy one of their many albums locally. And what an album Amazon has chosen to begin marketing! "Talisman" is considered their best effort to date, with 12 pulsating songs, each one a classic in its own right. Blending rock with Andean rhythms and instruments (pan-pipes, flute, charango), Octavia's music is hard to describe, although bands like Coldplay, the Red Hot Chili Peppers and U2 come to mind when comparing; perhaps the closest relatives being Latin fellow rockers like Cerati or Cafe Tacuba (both of which they have toured with). While the album does not capture the energy of their live performances, I was surprised to find other subtleties in the album versions of the songs. It was equally difficult to decide whether I liked the English (Disc 1) or Spanish (Disc 2) versions of the songs better, as they are both equally compelling in different ways. One thing is sure, I hope this won't be the last album Amazon puts on the market, and other albums soon follow.



Hasta ahora, la única manera de poder acceder a la música de este excelente grupo de rock independiente era el trepar hasta los 13,000 pies sobre el nivel del mar de la capital de Bolivia, para escucharlos tocar en vivo o para comprar uno de sus álbumes localmente. Y que álbum se escogió Amazon comenzar a mercadear! "Talismán" es considerado su mejor trabajo, con 12 canciones vibrantes, cada una un clásico en sus propios términos. Una mezcla de rock con ritmos e instrumentos andinos (zampoña, quena, charango), la música de Octavia es difícil de describir, aunque grupos como Coldplay, Red Hot Chili Peppers y U2 vienen a la mente al compararlos; talvez sus parientes mas cercanos sean sus contemporáneos del rock-latino como Cerati y Café Tacuba (de hecho tocaron con ambos grupos). Mientras que el álbum no captura la energía de sus presentaciones en vivo, me sorprendió el encontrar otras sutilezas en las versiones del álbum. Fue igualmente difícil el decidir cual es mejor, si las versiones en inglés (Disco 1) o las versiones en español (Disco 2), ya que ambas me parecieron buenas de distinta forma. Eso si, espero que este no sea el último álbum que Amazon saque al mercado y que pronto le sigan otros álbumes."
