My Favoite Offenbach

"I love the works of Offenbach quite a bit but this opperetta is by far my favorite Offenbach opera-bouffe. Everything about it is magnificent! The music is witty as well as grand. Some of the simplest of lyrics (though still fantastic in their simplicity) inspire offenbach to feats so great in music that some of the grand composer's that he means to mock he matches in his compisitions.

In act 2 when the brigands attempt to get an Inn keeper to let them in. The entire group start by simply asking to be let in because they are hungry and will eat anything. That is all that they ask and yet Offenbach turns this in to a grand canon and one of the best pieces of music I have ever heard! Starting with a few simple vioces but building into a grand ensamble with more splendour then you normally get with operetta or even many operas.

Then comes the fantastic 'Duetto du notaire' which will be burned into your brain instantly and I dare you to resist tapping your foot vigorously through out! And thankfully this is followed by the 'Trio des marmitons 'which is just as addicting! And I am not just spouting off tracks. These peices are all fantastic. If you buy this opera you will be hooked for months! I've owned this CD for years now and the disks are starting to wear out. I would love to go on and compliment every track for there is not a dud or dull song in the entire operetta. It sparkles through out. The only offenbach operetta that is as good and as addictive as 'Les Brigands' is 'La Vie Parisienne'. But don't get me wrong I love them all but these two are the most lively and most vibrant. This is the piece that inspired W.S. Gilbert to write the Pirates of Penzance. He even wrote a translated version of this opera first.

This is Offenbach at his most pleasurable high point! It figures as well since shortly after the premiere of 'Les Brigands' Louis Naploean was defeated by the Prussians and the French 2nd empire came crashing down and along with it the atmosphere that made Offenbachs music so popular. He would never achieve this kind of success untill he was about to die."
