All oldies, some goodies, a time trip.

More oldies but goodies to make you wanna DANCE !!!

"Oldies But Goodies, Vol. 12 is a fine installment in this fifteen CD series of classic hits mostly from the golden era of rock and roll. The sound quality is excellent and the artwork is just OK--but, then again, since when do we really buy CDs for the artwork? The music is what counts--and the music we get here is great!



The Troggs start things off with a really hot number, "Wild Thing." "Wild Thing" has excellent guitar work and the minor keys they use really make this number great! The Troggs sing and play this number to perfection--and the sharp contrast of the flute in the musical arrangement makes it very pretty in its own unique way. Chuck Berry also sings "Sweet Little Sixteen" with lots of positive energy and this tune is another big hit from the golden era of rock and roll. Music Explosion also scores a huge hit with their "A Little Bit O'Soul;" this has a great melody and it never ceases to make me smile when I hear this song. Similarly, Fontella Bass does so well on her hit entitled "Rescue Me;" this still gets airplay on the "oldies" stations and I'm impressed every time I hear it.



"One Fine Day" is a huge score for The Chiffons; and they sing this like the champs they always were! The Chiffons were one of the best girl groups ever on the scene during the 1960s; and hits like this prove it. "One Fine Day" is easily a major highlight of this album. In addition, James & Bobby Purify perform "I'm Your Puppet" with lots of feeling and they harmonize well; the percussion enhances the number as they sing so well of a man who wants to do his best to please his sweetheart. Rudy & The Romantics also do a wonderful job on "Our Day Will Come;" "Our Day Will Come" is a fine `60s tune that I always liked and the elegant percussion reminds me of the `60s Latin beat that was also very popular for dancing at that time.



"Gypsy Woman" by The Impressions is an excellent tune that uses the percussion very well; The Impressions perform this very well with their excellent ability to handle complicated tempo and key changes seemingly effortlessly. Lenny Welch also does a super job with "Since I Fell For You;" this passionate and very beautiful love song always moves me. Lenny Welch was such a fine singer; and I am left wondering why he wasn't a bigger recording artist at that time. The Everly Brothers also deliver "All I Have To Do Is Dream" with panache; The Everly Brothers were two of the best vocalists of the day and just one listen to this song proves it. The CD also ends well with "Lonely Boy" by Paul Anka. Paul's excellent voice is truly a finely tuned instrument and this makes a strong ending for this album.



Oldies But Goodies, Vol. 12 is an excellent album with great hits and ballads from the earlier years of rock and roll. I highly recommend this album for fans of early rock and roll and people who like classic pop vocals will find many songs to enjoy on this album as well.

"This CD continues the tradition of great OBG albums. If anything, the tracks are even better than normal - "The Letter", "Our Day Will Come", "One Fine Day", "Rescue Me" and "Since I Fell For You" are all fantastic, and most of the rest are maybe half a step behind. As usual, the inclusion of a few 70's tracks makes for some odd listening, but the two selections ("La La Means I Love You" and "Reunited") aren't that bad. A great collection to start out with."
