Synopsis
Amazon.com Eyes rimmed with smoky charcoal liner, lips glossed to a porcelain sneer, Olivia--the first artist to be signed to Clive Davis's J Records--fronts like she's hip-hop hard and soul-singer soft on the cover photo of her eponymous debut. Luckily for her, the music biz is all about image these days, since there's not much to back up her posturing on this collection of ho-hum titillaters. The 20-year-old singer/rapper from Queens does her best to exude diva-esque traits--sex-kitten appeal, bling-bling bravado, and a whole lot of 'tude. And these elements come together nicely over the infectiously lowdown groove of "Bizounce," the album's slang-slinging first single (yet another addition to the growing canon of no-scrubs anthems). But Olivia's voice--a delicate, girlish mezzo-soprano à la Mya or Aaliyah--is ill suited to the tough-as-nails swagger she tries to convey with lyrics like "Nigga, you ain't knowing you was f---ing with a star" ("Silly Bitch in Love"), or "I'm in love with America's most dangerous thug" ("Til He Comes Home"). For all of her bluster though, Olivia's more than a pretty face--she's got a knack for delivering R&B melodies with hip-hop flair. And, occasionally, her vocals shine (like on the lilting ballad "It's on Again"), hopefully indicating that she will transcend her current role as a prepackaged pop star. --Sylvia W. CD ReviewsOlivia......Giving you smooth and rough all in one I.B. | Westampton, NJ | 05/16/2001 (4 out of 5 stars) "This cd from olivia is probably one of the hottest cds out from any R+B female singer right now. There is no way to get bored with this cd because she just gives different sides of the hip/r+b world. This is another artist trying to take the rap/sing write/produce control like some astists such as Missy, Lauryn hill, wyclef, etc.. Moving on to the tracks on the album. What is good?*(1/5(sorry excuse) - 5/5(best thing since ice cream))*1-(4/5)-- This first single sets things off. The beat and flow match and couldnt be better coming form a new comer. 2-(4/5)-- This is probably one of the edgiest songs on the album. This is olivia telling someone to grab the camcorder and get ready for some action. Not for young ears but this is another tight rap/sing song with a good flow and beat.(might be the next single)3-(3/5)-- Fastest track on the album with olivia telling a brother how much she is feeling him. She holds back nothing when explainging why. You might not be suprised at first listen since she is singing so fats but after a few listens u will see. Nice beat...sounds liek rodney jerkins.4-(5/5)-- A slow jam that takes it to the edge. One of teh best slow songs on the album. The base line beat along with the melody makes this a song for repeat. About being confused with someone.5-(4/5)-- One of the smoothest tracks on the album that shows a completly different side of olivia. This is nothing short of bedroom music with the chinese chimes and gituar base line going. 6-(4/5)--A cool midtempo track with gituars and organs playing in the background about olivia not taking any woop-T-woo(nonsense) from her lover.7-(4/5)-- Olivia takes it down south on this one. Not like otehr down south joints you heard before. This one is on the R+B tip but the beat and everything is tight. Think "whats your fantasy"(the R+B remix).8-(3/5)-- This is a cool mid-tempo track that sounds like somethign tracy chapman could sing. She flips it once again talking about awaiting her mans arival from jail and making it through hard times. 9-(2/5)-- Midtempo/Hip-hop beat about what it takes to get with her in the club and what u wont get if u dont come correct.10-(3/5)--Another smooth slow jam that takes her in a different direction. This is about meeting your soulmate. Her voice is real smooth on this one. 11-(3/5)-- Another slow jam that takes it there. Olivia saying..."Once you view the cat, you never turning back". That should tell you where this song is going. Nice slow jam. 12-(3/5)-- This is olivia and label mate jimmy sharing vocals over a slow jam(ballad). Talkign about mesing up in a relationship and not being able to turn back.Overall, Olivia gave you a little bit of everything that she was feeling musicall, lyrically, and emotionally. this will probably be one of the best R+B debuts to drop in a while. I give her credit for writing all the songs/rhymes and taking control over so much of it. Her singing is not as powerful as someone like whitney houston but smooth and strong like sade or zhane. If you like R+B and Hip-hop then its no reason for you not to check this out. If you dont...listen and it just might get u into it as well. Dont sleep on this one. Get it!" Olivia- "You Got The Damn Thing!" T. Foster | Fort Lauderdale, FL | 05/29/2001 (5 out of 5 stars) "This CD is Tight! I Love Olivia's style. Bad girl lyrics on some songs, beautiful melodies on others. It's a great blend. My personal favs are "Bizounce" (Of Course! It was this song that first introduced me to her), "Are You Capable?" (Tight as All!), "You Got The Damn Thing" (My FAVORITE! I feel a strong urge to dance when I hear this one!) "It's On Again" (Lovely, Slowly, and Sensual) "Woop-T-Woo" (Sorta a softer version of Bizounce) "When 2 Souls Touch" (Another beautiful soft one) "Lower 2 My Heart" (Sexxxxy Baby! Need I say More?) "Look Around" (A great duet with a guy I've never heard of but sure I will here more of in the future) Pick up Olivia's self titled debut right away! After all, she's got the damn thing you're looking for! :)" Olivia Is Holding Down the Fort! Don't Sleep On Her. Lamar Sanders | Walterboro, SC USA | 06/14/2001 (5 out of 5 stars) "Olivia is the best new female singer and rapper out right now which she proved with her first single "Bizounce" which went to #4 on Billboard R&b charts. Her album is welled blended together with smoothed R&B ballads and R&b hiphop flavor tracks(which some showcase her rap skills . Here is the run down, 1.Bizounce-starts out with her incredible rapping skills then into her smooth singing voice, 2.Are U Capable-Her new single which is sure to be all over the charts, and showcase both skills, with rapping then flips it to singing. This song emphasizes what she wants,3.You Got The Damn Thing-fast hot track which will make you wanna dance. It was suppose to be the next single, but everyone has a club song out right now, 4.Silly B***ch In Love-smoothed R&B ballad which talks about silly women being in love with a player and a scrub, 5.It's On Again-one of the most beautiful ballad I ever heard. Her voice is so seductive, it will make you reminisce about a past love, 6.Woop-t-!Woo-is a song which she fed up with her man nonsense and she ask him to choose between her or his friends, 7.Whoadie-talks about her man and tells him how she feel about him,it has that dirty south vibe. 8.Til' He Comes Home-a song that she talks about keeping it real with her man while he's on the run and wait for his return. The rap verse on this song is hot, 9.Bring Da Roof Down-A club song which is hot because she also rap and sing in this one, 10.When 2 Souls Touch-A nice R&b ballad which expresses the eleglance of love, 11.Lower 2 My Heart-a R&b ballad with elements of jazz which she's anticipating for her lover to not keep her waiting, 12.Look Around- a duet with labelmate Jimmy Cozier which talks about a relationship going through some problems. Nice Duet by Olivia. It obvious Olivia is going grab attention from everyone, so everyone who like R&b and hiphop need to purchase this album because it is hot.(If it wasn't I wouldn't waste my time writing this review)"
