Essential Masterpiece
A. Davis | Greenville, SC | 05/05/2003
(5 out of 5 stars)

"To really appreciate the gifted musicians that made up this 1979 version of the group Oregon, you had to see or hear them live. The experience is best descibed as a spiritual awakening. This recording presents the group at its' spendid best. Collin Walcott, Glenn Moore, Ralph Towner and Paul McCandless recorded this masterpiece during a time when Fusion ruled the Jazz corridors. Oregon presented their own version of Fusion by bringing together elements from Jazz, Classical, Indian Raga, Third Stream and Native American music. "In Performance" captures the essence of this group doing what it does best - spinning out intriguing music that takes you to places you have never been before. Listening closely, you can hear the wonderful spontaneous chemistry that these musicians possessed as they explore and build off of each others improvisations. Blessed with excellent compositions and intense solos, this disc is the one Oregon recording that everyone should have in their collection. This Masterpiece truly captures the spirit and beauty of what real fusion was all about - taking elements from different cultures and blending them into beautiful soundscapes. Thank you Wounded Bird Records for releasing this overlooked treasure!!!"
Musically sublime, audio quality disappointing

"I have waited years for this album to be released on CD, but listening to it this week has been a big disappointment. Rather than digitalizing this from the master tapes, this CD was quite obviously made straight from vinyl - complete with hisses, pops, etc. Especially poor toward the end (ruining one of the finest recordings of Icarus with McCandless at his best). I really expected more and suspect the members of Oregon had very little to do with this release. C'mon folks, yank this off the shelf and give us the real recording. I still have my vinyl version of this and it is easier to listen to."
