CD Reviews

The Greatest Voice of All Time
Emilio Iodice | 12/19/2009
(5 out of 5 stars)

"For those who love the greatest and grandest of voices, Mario Lanza was the benchmark. He was the standard by which all tenors and singers should measure themselves. His versatility and ability to cross over from opera to popular music, and his ability to bring classical opera to the common person through his movies. The emotion and passion that he transmitted is incomparable. This collection represents him well and is an investment for those who want to know the best and brightest of stars in the world of music."
Magnificent. The greatest voice of all time.

"Listening to this man sing is what singing is all about.Nothing like this today.Would have to be the greatest voice of all time, beautifully placed and he sings everything, opera and song, right from the heart.

ARRIVEDERCI LANZA
Barry McCanna | Normandy, France | 01/24/2010
(5 out of 5 stars)

"This reissue comprises the contents of five RCA Victor LPs (four of them Red Seal) which first came out in 1954 (The Student Prince), 1955 (The Touch of Your Hand), 1958 (Seven Hills of Rome), and posthumously in 1962 (I'll Walk with God), and 1967 (His Favourite Arias). Sony have respected that format by producing five CDs, each housed in a smaller card facsimile of the original record sleeve, thereby maintaining the integrity of the originals.

The first CD presents the score of Sigmund Romberg's operetta as heard in the MGM film, for which Lanza dubbed the songs to Edmund Purdom's screen presence. He's joined in the two duets by soprano Elisabeth Doubleday, and the CD is completed by six songs from other light musicals, all accompanied by Constantine Callinicos.

In "The Touch of Your Hand" Lanza is accompanied by the orchestra of Ray Sinatra in a varied programme which includes popular songs from films and shows, and romantic ballads. I have a slight reservation that his voice is too powerful to convey the tenderness inherent in such lyrics as "Love is the Sweetest Thing".

The original film soundtrack from "Seven Hills of Rome" is rounded out by half-a-dozen popular songs, three accompanied by Henri René, and two by Ray Heindorf.

"I'll Walk with God" is subtitled Songs of Devotion and Love; orchestral accompaniments are provided in the main by Constantine Collinicos, plus four by Ray Sinatra, and the presence of Harpo Marx is noted in "Guardian Angels".

The twelve tracks for "His Favourite Arias" were taken from tapes of his 1951 and 1952 appearances on radio's "Coca Cola Hour", but the accompaniment is unspecified.

Mario Lanza was a huge star with a thrilling voice, which is beautifully recaptured in these performances. I cannot praise this release too highly, it is truly magnificent."
