Amazon.comIn 1951, talented Cuban violinist, composer, and arranger Enrique Jorrin cofounded Orquesta America, the first charanga band. The ensemble--which featured piano, bass, percussion, violin, cello, and wooden flute--made a soulful, sophisticated, syncopated sound called the cha-cha-cha, whicht captured the fancy of music lovers from Havana to Harlem. This CD features the current roster of the marvelous ensemble. Their elegance sounds as fresh today it did a half-century ago, especially on the ballroom-ready tracks "Cha Barroco" and "Cha-Cha-Cha para un Flautista" (the latter of which showcases the group's formidable flutist, Manuel Francisco Sanchez Wanbrug). The group also shows off its versatility with bolero, danzon, and son selections. Simply put, this CD delivers the classic sound of a great band. --Eugene Holley, Jr.
