"A CASCADE OF IDEAS, FIRST-CLASS MUSIC.Recorded in Los Angeles in 1986, this very beautiful "live" disc presents Oscar Peterson in very good shape who plays with Joe Pass (guitar), Dave Young (bass) and Martin Drew (drums). Class and entertainment: it starts with "Cool walk" (Peterson), where piano and guitar talk very well. Sweetness : the second piece is the wonderful "Love ballade" (by Benny Goodman), a song very soft but which can produce very deep feeling. I have tried to compare this version with that "solo piano" played ten years later by Oscar Peterson ("Live at the Salle Pleyel") : they are really very good both, I cannot choice one, try you please. The third piece ("Soft winds") comes back at atmosphere of first; in these songs we can appreciate better the rhythmic section, very good. Fourth track is a "medley" that mixes three songs, and also this time - as always in these situations - Peterson seems joke; the third song is "Time after time" (by Jules Styne), that Peterson remakes with great invention and interprets like a very agreeable music, full of surprises. The disc ends with "On the trail", played with charm and again with so many different ideas! Very good the duet with Pass, listen that last crazy running, so speed and so perfect!UNA CASCATA DI IDEE, SUONATE CON GRAN CLASSERegistrato a Los Angeles nel 1986, questo magnifico disco "live" vede un Peterson in gran forma suonare con Joe Pass alla chitarra, Dave Young al basso e Martin Drew alle percussioni. Classe e divertimento : si inizia con "Cool walk" (Peterson), dove piano e chitarra si intendono benissimo. Dolcezza : il secondo pezzo è la bellissima "Love ballade" (di Benny Goodman), un brano molto delicato ma capace di suscitare stati d'animo molto particolari. Ho provato a confrontare la versione "per solo piano" offerta dieci anni dopo da Peterson nel "live" alla Salle Pleyel : sono entrambe magnifiche, non saprei scegliere, provate voi. Con il terzo brano ("Soft winds") si torna all'atmosfera del primo; in questi pezzi si apprezza maggiormente la sezione ritmica, di ottimo livello. La quarta traccia è un "medley" che unisce tre canzoni, e come al solito Peterson sembra divertirsi parecchio in queste occasioni; il terzo pezzo è "Time after time" (di Jules Styne), che Peterson rielabora con grande inventiva facendone una musica piacevolissima e piena di sorprese. Chiude il disco "On the trail", suonato con grandissima classe e anche in questo caso con una sorprendente varietà di invenzioni; ottimo il duetto con Pass, impressionante la velocizzazione finale."
