Impassioned performance, so-so sonics

"I bought this recording on a lark because of the low price. It has become my preferred Missa because of the power of the performance. Klemperer hammers away at the climaxes with astonishing intensity. His later recording with EMI pales in comparison. Bohm on DG is bland by comparison. Bernstein is all over the place. The Kubelik on Orfeo has a violin solo to die for (even if it is out of tune). Be prepared to listen through the sonics which, at points, can be brutal, with the upper registers sounding screechy. The sound quality is by no means the worst example I've ever heard. (Perhaps the fact that I'm a Furtwangler nut has inured me to the sound of recordings from the 40's and early 50's.) Mono I don't mind. Some of the greatest recordings ever made are in mono.If sonics are of over-riding importance to you, the Kubelik might be your choice. It's recorded in spacious, modern sound, but the intensity is a notch below Klemperer's, excepting the violin solo as noted above. I haven't had a chance to listen to either the Levine (top rated in ARG) or the Herreweghe (top rated by Amazon).-- ray"

""A Music Fan" posted a review on this page, rating the disc 1 star and saying that the disc appeared to be in mono even though it is billed as stereo. I believe he or she may be referring to a different (and almost simultaneous) single-disc release, catalog #30371 00022, of the Missa Solemnis, which uses the 1966 LP reissue cover, complete with its "STEREOPHONIC" banner along the top edge, and which used the "fake stereo" masters used on that reissue LP, not the original mono masters used on this 2-disc set. The fake stereo version is ABSOLUTELY AWFUL. This newer remastering, which mercifully reverts to the original mono, is no sonic picnic, but is a vast improvement over the other version. The performance is as detailed in the previous reviews. Get it!"
