CD Reviews

Outkast in a new direction
David Anderson | St. Cloud, MN | 10/28/2003
(5 out of 5 stars)

""The Way You Move" features Big Boi's rapping and Sleepy Brown's singing. This track has a wonderful hip hop beat that everyone can dance to. It offers a varity of genres: rap, R&B, and dance. Such combination signatures Outkast's unique musical vision. "Hey Ya" features Andre 3000 showcases his previously unknown singing skills instead of rapping. This is another track that everyone can dance to, regardless of musical preference. The combination of pop and techno offers a further unique sound that the audience will enjoy. Both tracks showcase Outkast's new sense of experimentation, a rarity for modern day hip hop. They prove that they are one of the best rap acts of today. Both tracks are a great escape from the sell-out rap and hip hop acts constantly heard on mainstream radio. Their new sound proves that they continue to evolve as artists. Fans of Outkast should also purchase their new album "The Love Below/Speakerboxx", which features these catchy tracks. This album will give the listener a further look at their modern day musical envision."
You gonna be wanting this 808

"Perhaps it's time to stop focusing on the new singles by Outkast and start taking the `crunk to the funk' and review the whole, wondrous double album "Speakerboxxx/The Love Below". At some point, I will get around to that. It's an amazing album that continues to solidify Outkast's supremacy in the rap/hip-hop/R&B game. However, the first single to be heard off of Big Boi's side of the double album ("Speakerboxxx") is an undeniably catchy and fascinating tune. "The Way You Move" shows that Big Boi still has the skills that make him one of top MCs in the game today while also showing that he understands and respects the skillful contributions Andre3000 had to their earlier work. This song provides some off-the-hook lyricism, courtesy of Big Boi, while also offering up fresh, Marvin Gaye inspired vocals by Sleepy Brown.

Now, I could attempt to break down the individual elements of the song in an attempt to quantify what makes this song such a marvel, but, given that I'm not a musical expert, my assessments would only deaden the impact of this song. So, I can only recommend that you listen to this song and watch the truly eye-catching video that goes with it. You may not know what an 808 is, but you will sure be wanting it."
