"Originally entitled (translated to English) "Gregorian Chants for Christmas," this album is actually on its second release. During its first release, I bought it on cassette -- out of curiosity because of the artistic, medieval Christmassy cover (not the same cover you see now, unfortunately). I didn't know what to expect then. But the MUSIC -- it will touch your soul even if you're not Catholic (I'm Protestant). The melofluent voices of the Benedictine monks of Munsterschwarzach were conducted excellently and perfectly by Pater Godehard Joppich.I don't know why, but the Benedictine monks are the best when it comes to Gregorian chants. Remember the monks of Santo Domingo de Silos who topped the charts years ago with their "Chant" albums? They also belong to the Benedictine Order. I've compared Benedictine chanting with the works of other religious orders; others are just mediocre. If you don't believe me, perform a comparative analysis....In 2001, due to popular demand, Archiv re-released the album -- and this is so much better because of the bonus CD: the same Benedictine monks under the same conductor chanting for the Lenten season! One CD for Christmas and another for Lent! This is perfect for your meditation during these two holiest events in the Christian calendar. I also listen to this music when I do my arts and crafts; it inspires and keeps me focused on my work."
