CD ReviewsStunning, Lyrical, Brilliant 07/18/1999 (5 out of 5 stars) "Similar to the classic Jim Hall/Bill Evans duets, "We'll Be Together Again" is achingly beautiful. Martino's ballad work on "Send in the Clowns" leaves one breathless in terms of its strong emotional import and cerebral punch. With Gil Goldstein's flawless support, this record could have been called "Empathy" due to the player's almost psychic rapport. A stunning collection of ballads, highly recommended. "We'll Be Together Again," could well be the jewell in Martino's brilliant discography." Haunting and achingly beautiful Erik Quick | Washington, D.C. | 10/04/2002 (5 out of 5 stars) "The liner notes contain excerpts from fan letters to Martino, each of which describe this release as either their favorite Martino record in particular, or one of the great jazz guitar albums in general - and seeking the reissue on CD. It is not difficult to understand their feelings. The album contains (primarily) haunting, and achingly beautiful, ballads. The duets with Goldstein are surely to be compared with the classic Evans/Hall pairings. But unlike the equal roles Evans/Hall play with each other, this is Martino's show, with Goldstein playing a supportive role, using his keyboards for texture and color. Mancini's "Dreamsville" has never been played more effectively, and J.J. Johnson's "Lament" is a true example of the song's title. A jazz classic, in every sense of the word. Indispensable."
