"verse makes no pretensions about being other than about verses, lyrical verses, poetry verses, sung over a jazz quintet, including barber on piano.
the songs, lyrics and music, are written by barber. i'm probably not the first listener to be reminded of joni mitchell while listening to verse. or to make comparisons to cassandra wilson's tone while listening to barber's smoky, sultry voice.
the song clues is, like much poetry, a listing of things. the composition sounds like windmills of your mind.
my favorite selections are dansons la gigue, sang by barber in french, from a text by the poet, paul verlaine, and the cd's concluding track, if i were blue, a number more song than verse, words punctuated by barber's piano. my first time listening to patricia barber, based on her piano playing on if i were blue, i want to hear more of her work.
dave douglas on trumpet has never sounded better than he does with patricia barber."
