"If only so many acts these days could really make highly acclaimed greatest hits packages. Nevertheless, when one does, something happens to be missing at times from a great song, to just a appeal to what good music really is about. For the past year, I've seen some absolutely well-recognized greatest hits records from acts like Tina Turner, Seal, and Cher to name a few. But something always was missing. For somebody like Patti LaBelle, she also last year has had that same story with her Anthology double-album. Unfortunately, that missed a whole lot, but this package definitely tries to make-up for that flaw.



The 2005 Patti LaBelle: Gold is a highly-acclaimed double album that really does a very good jib at reflecting a diva who next year will be celebrating her 45th anniversary as a performer. The colection does deliver in reflecting her time from her days with The Blubelles, to LaBelle, all the way through her solo efforts. The collection delivers as a well-recognized package of her hits including smashes like New Attitude, On My Own with Michael McDonald, the dance classic Lady Marmalade, If You Ask Me To, as well as current favorites like New Day from her 2004 Timeless Journey record, When You Talk About Love, The Right Kinda Lover, and When A Woman Loves. However, like most greatest hits packages, there always is something unamicably missing. The album does still overshadow some great Patti LaBelle classics like I'm In Love Again, and her remake of the Debarge gem All My Love to name a few.



Despite a few overlooks, Patti LaBelle: Gold does absolutely deliver for anybody who doesn't own a Patti LaBelle record, or for anybody who is looking for a better hits package from a legendary diva, whose attitude is still a never say die delight after all these years.

"I LOVE PATTI I THINK SHES THE GREATEST THING MUSIC HAS EVER HAD! i HAVE EVERYHTHING BY HER FROM CD'S TO DVDS TO WATCHING HER SHOW LIVING IT UP WITH PATTI LABELLE ON TV ONE TUESDAYS AND 8:30 AND SATURDAYS AT 11:00! ATTENTION PATTI FANS I HAVE ALL HER MUSIC ON HERE ON DIFFERENT ALBUMS BUT I GOT IT TO SUPPORT PATTI!LETS MAKE THIS HER FIRST GREATEST HITS ALBUM TO HIT THE CHARTS!"

"This is a decent "Gold" package for Ms. Labelle but it's not above that. They did catch all the great hits but other than that, the other songs could've been left off.

What would've made this a really GREAT package is if they had more Bluebelles tunes, "Moonshadow", "Night bird", "Won't Get Fooled Again", "Running Out Of Fools" By Labelle, the duet she did with Bobby Womack "Love Has Finally Come At Last" and more live performances that are hard to find like her duet with Luther, "Is It Still Good To You", her duet with Donny McClurkin "Stand", her tribute to Destiny's Child last year "I'll Stand By You", her live performance in 2001 of "Lady Marmalade" on the Grammy's, "If You Don't Know Me By Now", "The Wind Beneath My Wings". Most of the live performances could've been in place of the lesser known tracks on the 2nd Disc. We all know she lights it up live so why isn't any of these live performances on here?. On Stage is where she shines the best. Other songs that are missing that are equally as deserving to be on this collection are "Go Solo" with Ronald Isley, "Ain't No Way" with Mary J. Blige, "One Of Those Mornings" with Moby, "Preaching To The Choir" with Labelle & Tye Tribett, "Here & Now [Live]" & "Superwoman" with Gladys Knight & Dionne Warwick. If almost all of these songs were on here, it would've gotten a very big 5 from me.

The 90s were not good to Ms. Labelle as far as hits and you can tell when you go through the listing of the 2nd Disc; only about 3 or 4 songs on the 2nd Disc were actually hits. The songs that were forgotten, which I've mentioned, would've made the 2nd Disc near the level of the first disc (which wasn't that "Gold" in my opinion but it has more great songs than the 2nd disc). I wonder if they'll put a "Gold" collection together for Whitney, Aretha and Mary; it's only long-overdue."
