"I had this one originally in its glorious 8-track form and I wore out the tape. That indicates that I found it to be one of the singer's best.Patti's first solo effort gave just a hint of the superstar to come. While some of the songs appear dated (it was circa 1977), there are some that are timeless and are cherished by those that have followed the meteoric rise of this one-of-a-kind vocalist.Like the 8-track, the CD is getting a lot of stereo play."
It's Patti's Party And Everyone's Invited To Join The Fun!!

"And party it IS!From the ebullient hit "Joy To Have Your Love" through the chunky New Orleans FONK rhythms of "Funky Music","Dan Swit Me",with it's festive and very New Orleans horns,"You Can't Judge A Book By The Cover" and the upbeat "I Think About You" Patti's self-titled debut outside the group Labelle puts her souring voice into it's proper grooving context! Following up the wild and wholly funk-rock soul of the final LaBelle recording Chameleon 'Patti Labelle' finds the singer in the same kind of form, combining festive and extremely funky uptempo tunes with slower ones. And don't kid yourself-Patti also makes her usual pretty mess of ballads like the classic "Since I Don't Have You" and "You Are My Friend".Sure it is a little searching in places but she does an amazing job with the material she's given. And this is where I state my general opinion of Patti Labelle's solo career;she's got an amazing voice and she was as funny as you can get as Mrs.Wayne on 'A Different World' but there's a problem-NONE of it works with poor material.Frankly I think alot of her albums after this were a little uneven-always trying to place Patti into a big ballad nightmare that she just doesn't belong on-that NEVER happens on this album! Her nasal, expressively soulful voice belongs in the groove and on her first ever solo album she generally steers into the direction of that funky diva that gave us the ever so sassy "Lady Marmalade" just four years earlier. And even though she has done some great songs solo like "New Attitude","Stir It Up" and "Body Lanuage" (I'm sure your Labelle fans have your own lists) she SMOKES on uptempo cuts and I always find myself wishing she would return to this Funky Diva neighborhood instead of searching out the eternal chart grabber. A word on the CD version presented here-I just replaced my vinyl and this CD has the most incredible sound and mastering, especially for an early 90's digitally remastered analog recording-everything sounds loud, clear and crisp so while it's still attainable cheaply used I'd pick it up if I were you!Anyway rock on,Patti!!"

"this album clearly represents the multi talented singer in various settings that showcase her vocals in wondrous exhibitions. The legendary recording "you are my friend' is the song that showcases her vocal abilities the best.
it would've been great to see this song become the hit that it potentially could ,back in '77. However, Patti Labelle is one heck of a song stylist."
