Patti caresses these songs as a lover would sing them to the beloved.There's no doubt in my mind that Patti loved these songs when she recorded them. From the opening selection EAST OF THE SUN to the closer I THOUGHT ABOUT YOU the lights are low, the mood is love!"

"Four and a Half BIG Stars Overall!! Five HUGE Stars for Patti Page herself and the band!! Patti sings wonderful, timeless, superb interpretations of some classic popular songs, backed by Jack Rael's wonderful orchestra, recorded between 1953 and 1956. This CD is clear demonstration why Ms Page is one of the GREATEST popular music singers of her time OR anytime, considering the fact that she sings in a totally unique personal style and she has sold over 100 Million records. When one considers that her career flourished when the country had half the population that it currently has, her total sales are astounding and put her in company with the Madonnas, Whitney Houstons, Celine Dions, and Mariah Careys of this current era's superstar divas. And this unremastered but clear-sounding CD shows 'pop super diva' Patti Page (am I the first to use that fitting title for her?) in all of her glory: using an immediately identifiable, sweet, golden voice; a unique way of turning a phrase; superb timing; and a deep understanding of the song's lyrics. She sings songs that appeal to anyone with their simplicity and heartfelt message, in a serene style that wraps the listener in an island of timeless aural pleasure during the song.



The 'Pieces De Resistance', the best of the best, begin with a stunning version of the Billy Eckstein classic "Everything I Have Is Yours" and she makes it her own, aided by a great Zoot Sims-like tenor solo. "Moon Over Miami" and "Red Sails In The Sunset" become travelogues and testaments to love, full of wonder and longing. Duke Ellington's classic "I Got It Bad And That Ain't Good" has Ms Page wonderfully touching base with the blues. Her interpretation of the Haven Gillespie lyric to "You Go To My Head", with a vocal chorus, is pure joy. And she elevates songs like "What's New", "Don't Blame Me", "It's A Sin To Tell A Lie" and "There Is No Greater Love" to another level with her personal style. None of her greatest hits like "Old Cape Cod" and "Tennessee Waltz" are here, but these are wonderful performances expanding our view of her vocal range and interests. Hats off to her longtime music partner Jack Rael for his musical genius. Pure, timeless, serene beauty!! Highly Recommended for all pop music lovers; absolutely essential for all Patti Page fans! Five HUGE Stars for Patti Page and the orchestra. Four and a Half OVERALL Stars (see Notes).

* Trivia: Patti Page was the first singer in history whose voice was multi-tracked on the same song: "Confess", preceding Les Paul multi-tracking the voice of wife Mary Ford. But Les Paul did make history by multi-tracking his guitar before anyone ever used the technique, even Patti Page.)"

"Patti recorded these standards for 45 extended play four song albums mostly. Albums such as "Music for Two in Love," and all the "Page number" albums, along with "This Is My Song" were actually L.P. compilations of music that originally appeared on the four-song E.P.s. Because Mercury was unfortunately weak at albums, issuing collections that mostly compiled singles and albums with weak or vague themes and perfunctory cover art, few Mercury artists had the opportunity to explore albums with intellect and artistry. Patti's E.P. recordings really represented her best work but it was always hidden and when issued on L.P. almost never appeared with any coherency. So this music is well worth having; it will show you that Patti Page went far beyond being a hit maker."
