"Paul Brill surprised me with "New Pagan Love Song" back in 2004. With "Harpooner" he's outdone himself. His voice and poignant lyrics continue to make him stand out as few artists these days. The feel that you are listening to a Thom Yorke, Elliott Smith or Jeff Tweedy is still there sometimes, but his whole blend of urban folk brings a freshness to his approach that is unparalleled and appealing.
Paul Brill experiments with sounds like the best of them, throwing layer upon layer of electronic bits, alongside instruments that normally don't "belong" next to each other... but he manages to make them work out magically.
The end result of "Harpooner" is an album that will hook you (no pun intended) and let you take it from the top or start anywhere you want, taking you on a different special trip every time and making it land easily on my Best of 2006 list"
