"Five ENJOYABLE Stars! Virtuoso viola-master Paul Cortese, one of today's top solo and ensemble violists and educators, elevates this often under-appreciated instrument, which literally plays 'second fiddle" to the violin, into the spotlight with thrilling performances that demonstrate its singular beauty and capabilities. All of which are played on a beautiful-sounding instrument that was constructed within a year prior to this recording and is proudly displayed on the CD cover. While many classical musicians are opting for instruments made hundreds of years ago, Mr Cortese proves it's not so much the instrument as it is the musicians, the composer, and the execution. Augmented by the inspired pianism of Juan Carlos Garvayo, this CD presents 3 duo performances and one solo performance of 20th Century compositions by some truly amazing classical composers.
DMitri Shostakovich's "Sonata for Viola and Piano" becomes a burning experience as Messrs Cortese and Garvayo deliver all of the mystery, beauty, and intensity of this composition. From the opening pizzicato statement of the Moderato movement to the tension of the Allegretto movement to the coda of the Adagio, these musicians demonstrate thrilling expertise, flawless timing, and musical ESP. But with all due respect to the talented Mr Garvayo, for me the 'Piece de Resistance' is the thrilling solo performance of Aram Khacturian's "Sonata for Viola Solo" that runs the gamut of feelings, technical demands, and sheer exhilaration. The dazzling viola musicianship of Paul Cortese deserves to be in the collection of serious enthusiasts. The sound is clear and immediate. Kudos to Juan Carlos Garvayo for his superb pianistic support. HIghly Recommended. Five REMARKABLE Stars. (Audio CD, total time:65:45, with jewel box and extensive notes.)"
