Paul Oakenfold- Anthems

"Oakenfold's newest release could be considered a milestone for dance music. The three disc collection spans from the mid nineties to the early part of the new millinium with a collection of classic dance floor tracks, ranging from melodic trance, dark drum and bass, and high energy club bangers. The mixes are superbly mixed by one of the greatest dj's of our time, Paul Oakenfold, and this will certainly take clubbers down memory lane. The album features several tracks that appeared on Oakey's mixed compilations that have become classics (such as Tranceport, Another World, the Global Underground compilations, 2 Years Resident at Cream, etc.). For me, this album is special because the first complete listen did bring up a lot of good memories because it was around 1997 or 1998 when I first started getting into a lot of electronic music, especially Paul Oakenfold. A few of the producers that appear on the compilation are BT, U2, Goureyella, Timo Maas, Tilt, Hybrid, Energy 52, Matt Darey, Robert Miles, Kosheen, Iio, ATB, Delerium featuring Sarah McLachlan, and Paul Oakenfold himself. To summarize every track and the mixing of the album would be a novel, so I'll just show the tracklisting:

"This is a great 3-disk set with many classic Oakenfold remixes. I love it. The only problem is since it is an import the track list doesn't update correctly from the internet when you rip to your computer. So if you are transferring to an mp3 player you will have to edit the song name and artist manually. But that's not a huge deal."

"I've been hoping that Oakie would come out with one of these albums. It has a lot of older stuff that I forgot about (like Zombie Nation) and it brings back memories of the parties from back in the day. The time when this was "underground" and the music was about the music and not about MTV! I wish he would have put some more songs/anthems on this, but he had so many back then that it would be impossible to have them all on just three cd's. And his mixing on these cd's was old school Oakenfold. Each song is around 4 mins long and then shoots right on into the next song kind of like his work at Cream. I'm So happy to have this. I'll be listening to this for years and years."
Paul Oakenfold's original Persona revived

"Don't be confused by the release date of this album. In actuality, it was secretly printed up in 2004 and had a 5-year seal on it. ...Okay, not really, but one gets that feeling. It's not a bad thing.
The Oakenfold name has been slapped on so many different CDs and remixes of every genre of music you can think of over the past decade that it's pretty much impossible to figure out what his "bit" is... what he excels at, where he came from, what his passions are. Without a background or core, you might as well be a generic rented party DJ or a random someone (like me) mixing the same tracks together digitally and getting the same result.
It's been hidden for seemingly forever, but that original trance-based persona has shown itself again. Comprised pretty much completely across all 3 discs of tracks of 2003 or so and older, it's likely a lot of music newer fans may not have even heard before. To 'old timers' nearly every track is a notable classic, and to our delight they've been packaged together in a way no one had bothered to attempt before. Considering how well it all works, it gives mixed feelings-- should we be disgruntled that no one had bothered to try to do this with such detail before, or should we be pleased that it was Oakenfold who finally brought it to us? I'll go with the later. If there's one man alive with the proper qualifications to grab such a large collection of tracks together and package them up in their intended format, it's certainly him.
Besides being a delight for Oakenfold fans, it's also a spectacular trance collection for any interested listener... kind of like a 'greatest hits' list of a list that didn't exist before he came around. I can't think of anywhere else you can find this many club/rave classics in one place, and you could consider it something of an electronica textbook of what trance has given us. Hopefully it can be a starting point for new fans to explore the different artists featured, as well.
All in all, 3 full discs of great tunes with no true weaknesses... so long as you're not expecting another generic Oakenfold pop club remix album. You'll never have been so happy to be able to sing along with everything on your first time through the album."
