Basie's boys

"Totally unpretentious (like so many other mainstream jazz albums of the mid-50s) and totally swinging and enjoyable. Paul Quinichette, known as the Vice-President because of his affinity to the sound and approach of the President, Lester Young, is very much in a comedic vein on this album: listen to him on the up-tempo TEXAS SHUFFLE or the almost as quick OUT THE WINDOW and dig all the slurs and swoops in his solos. The man is having a heck of a good time! Trumpeter Shad Collins is the other half of the front line, and his open horn work (DIGGIN' FOR DEX) is particularly lyrical and mellow. If Quinichette was the VP, pianist Nat Pierce could easily be called the Vice-Count, or something similar: he better than just about any other pianoman captures the spare beauty of Basie's playing. He plays especially well on JIVE AT FIVE. It's a delightful CD, well worth looking into."

""For Basie" has Shad Collins, Paul Quinichette, Jo Jones, Freddie Green, Walter Page and Nat Pierce on piano. There are five tunes and on each the three horns have space to stretch out which they do. It's quite a swinging affair. It nicely complements "Basie Reunion" which has a similar line up.
