Paul Revere & The Raiders certainly turned out a lot of great tunes in their time; and this CD is a good single CD compilation of their hits. They really worked so hard to make each song sound awesome; and you can tell it's true when you hear this CD! The quality of the sound is excellent and I love that artwork, too.
"Louie, Louie" has a good beat and Paul Revere & The Raiders do their rendition of this classic tune with lots of passion--and how's about that electric guitar? "Louie, Louie" is a strong way to start the album. "Louie - Go Home" has a distinct 60's flavor to it that I really like; and listen also for "Steppin' Out." "Steppin' Out" has Paul Revere & The Raiders handling complex tempo and key changes like the pros they always were and still remain! "Steppin' Out" sounds great even today after all these years; this is excellent music.
"Just Like Me" has some awesome singing to go with that rockin' beat; Paul Revere & The Raiders do this one up right! "Melody for an Unknown Girl" is really nice; and that percussion makes it all the better. "Kicks" was clearly one of their bigger hits; all the stars in all the heavens must have been aligned just right when this group recorded this! "Kicks" is a tune I could never tire of hearing; this is all THAT good. "Hungry" has them again changing tempos and keys like true professionals; and I also like "The Great Airplane Strike" with that awesome music! "Good Thing" shines equally bright in their capable hands.
"Ups And Downs" features Paul Revere & The Raiders squarely front and center, which is quite all right by me! The music is excellent but it never plays so loud that you can't hear the words being sung--another sign of good quality, timeless rockin' music. "The Legend of Paul Revere" has a somewhat more laid-back feel to it; and there's another gem in "Action." "Action" is so good that you just may find yourself jumping up and dancing practically wherever you are! "I'm Not Your Stepping Stone" has some great electric guitar to enhance the musical arrangement; and "Him or Me - What's It Gonna Be?" is really awesome--these guys can really rock! The album ends really nicely with Paul Revere & The Raiders performing "Peace of Mind." "Peace of Mind" has a slower tempo and even that backup chorus certainly makes the number even better.
Paul Revere & The Raiders were giants amongst giants; and CDs like this one prove it. This is also a great starter CD for people just getting into this group. Diehard fans may want to look elsewhere for other songs that were not included on this disc, however. I myself wish it had included "Indian Reservation.""
