"A wonderful collection of late-'20s Whiteman Columbia sides, most of them making their first appearance on any post-78-RPM format. This CD showcases the brilliance of Whiteman arrangers Ferde Grofe and Bill Challis with one memorable performance after another. Best of the Grofe charts: "Roses of Yesterday," "Marianne," the riotous "Button Up Your Overcoat" (with an unforgettable vocal refrain by Vaughn De Leath), the amiably humorous "Japanese Mammy," the big-band-sounding "My Lucky Star," and a priceless orchestration of a priceless pop gem, "Something To Remember You By." Challis scores with superb proto-big-band scores like "Cradle of Love," "How About Me," and "Sittin' on a Rainbow." Sound quality, like the music, is great."
