CD Reviews

Fun, Harmless
James Fisher | New York, NY | 09/14/2006
(3 out of 5 stars)

"Maybe it's a musical snobbiness on my part, but I couldn't give this CD five stars. I feel I'd be ripping off all these classic CDs I've reviewed on here. I mean, I liked it. It was fun, harmless, with good beats, and hummable melodies. But at the same time it's so decadent and so foolish, the formula is tried, the songs uneven (even though I have frequently listened to it all the way through), and finally Paulina's voice sucks. But it's cool. The studio saves these shortcomings and it just comes across as a very silly, yet very addicting record, kinda like junk food. Listen to "My Friend, Mi Amigo," for example; the lyrics make you cringe as you sing along to them, but the fact of the matter is that you're singing along to them! And I'm talking about a lot of people I know.

Paulina is not exactly an artist of quality, but you can kind of tell that she was trying to make a really good pop record (she succeeded for the most part) with her 2000 album PAULINA, which made her the international Spanish pop star that she is today and that album rose above all the other ones that year. Then again, she attempted a crossover with 2002's BORDER GIRL, which is one of the worst pieces of junk that I have ever listened to.

Chances are if you like Spanish pop, you will like PAU-LATINA. And chances are if you like Spanish pop, you will already be familiar with it, or at least the single "Te Quise Tanto," which used to get played on the radio every ten minutes for a year."
