CD Reviews

Pearl Jam at their best....LIVE

"I've been eagerly awaiting the release of the American "bootlegs", after continuosly listening to the European series. This perticular show holds a certain special place for me, because I was there when it was recoeded. The performance that night was amazing. The band played some great surprises, "Crazy Marry" and "The Man Trilogy: Leather Man, Better Man, and Nothing Man" Only after seeing Pearl Jam NOT perform some of their biggest "radio hits" do you understand how many truely wonderful songs they have written. The Cd is sans "Alive" and "Glorified G" and some others; however, it still sounds like a live soundtrack to 90s alternative radio. The packaging is simple and keeps the price down for a DOUBLE CD, making it affordable to buy multiple performances. Although, in my opinion the Atlanta show should be mandatory, of course I'm biased."
Low energy, but still Pearl Jam

"This was one of the first of the 2000 sets I purchased, mostly because at the time I wasn't that into the band, and the setlist had a lot of appealing songs. In that respect, it's not without its highlights- Nothing as it Seems, In Hiding (Rarity off Yield), Daughter (Cool tag- REM's 'The Wrong Child) and Romanza/Betterman off of the first disk are quite good. When they return for the encore, Once makes a welcome and surprisingly powerful appearance. The hysterical crack at the beginning of Yellow Ledbetter ("Phillips! Let's make things better!") continues a theme of corporate pig bashing.

However, the set simply lacks the energy and passion that makes these bootlegs special. Corduroy and Insignificance, songs that usually get the crowd really fired up, are lazy and listless. I'm not a big Animal fan, and this performance did nothing to change that. Rival, off of Binaural, is slow to start and they never really get into the groove. The flub on Nothingman is also jarring and disappointing. Immortality... don't even listen to it. Lyrically, I believe it's Pearl Jam's finest work, but Eddie just can't seem to get it right. This version can only be described as a total disaster.

You can do better than this bootleg, both in terms of setlist and execution. The best recommendation I can give is that the rants about Ted "I've colorized the moon" Turner are amusing. Still, if you want to hear Eddie Vedder babble incoherently, you can buy pretty much any one of these shows."
