CD ReviewsPuerto Rican Folk-Jazz Robert Harding | Mobile, Alabama | 05/09/2004 (5 out of 5 stars) "This is the first of Pedro Guzman's series of instrumental discs called "Jibaro Jazz." A 'jibaro' is a Spanish word from the Caribbean for a 'country person', which reflects simplicity, honesty, and conviction. Guzman's music not only reflect these qualities but is an excellent mirror into the Puerto Rican mind.Guzman melds traditional folk melodies played on the Puerto Rican cuatro (similar to a small guitar) with jazz and pop sensibilities. In addition, some of the songs on this disc and his others are covers of popular American television songs/jingles, such as "Los Picapiedras" / The Flintstones (it should be noted, since many Americans are unaware, that Puerto Ricans are passport-holding U.S. citizens, so the term "American" is not absolute here).Guzman's music is light and inspiring. Perfect background for lying around in the hammock and listening to the symphony of coquis (or crickets)"
