"An exceptional set from baritonist Pepper Adams -- one of those great moments that artists hit only at a few spots in their career, especially during later years like this! The album's a live date that cooks with any of Pepper's classics from years back -- but it's also got a soulful complexity that takes it to rich new territory too -- a quality that's no doubt due to the presence of trumpeter Ted Curson in the quintet, playing with bold, righteous notes that really transform the record! It's rare to hear Adams' horn in such a setting, and he really responds to Curson's presence -- reaching out with long-blown and beautifully crafted solos that get a lot of energy from the rhythm trio of Victor Feldman on piano, Bob Magnusson on bass, and Carl Burnett on drums. And although Pepper only plays on 4 of the album's 6 tracks, his work is great -- and the other tracks feature superb performances from the other players too.
