CD Reviews

Good stuff
Chas Devlin | Los Angeles, CA United States | 02/20/2003
(4 out of 5 stars)

"I won't go into a long-winded review of each track, but for me, the standout is CONQUISTADOR -- an absolute killer version, complete with brass and organ solos! I have this on vinyl and had to splurge for the CD. Considering Percy Faith died a few years after these recordings, it's remarkable he put so much into it. The other tracks are covers of well-known standards from the time (Fiddler on the Roof, Godfather theme, Shaft), a few pop classics and the requisite Amazing Grace. While he may be pegged as 'easy listening', his stuff is not at all dreary or light -- such as 101 Strings, with their trademark violins. Faith was always accompanied by a large orchestra of accomplished musicians and talented back-up singers who certainly bring something new to each track. Two albums one one CD... well worth it, especially for Faith fans."
"the Old Masters come alive with Percy Faith arrangements"

"How about some Bach with a classic arrangement through the eyes of Maestro Percy Faith with the title tune "JOY" ~ moving into the every popular "BRIAN'S SONG" ~ on the same program are two John Barry compositions "LOVE THEME FROM "MARY, QUEEN OF SCOTS"(THIS WAY HOME)" and "DIAMONDS ARE FOREVER", as Barry demonstrates his versatility in the field of film scoring, but the arrangements by Faith are simply astounding ~ less we not overlook "GYPSIES, TRAMPS AND THIEVES", the Cher song has the Percy Faith Orchestra doing handstands on this one, every musician is getting into the act, big time. The second half of the CD is so captivating with "THE FIRST TIME EVER (I SAW YOUR FACE)", takes the MacColl tune to another level, with Orchestra and Chorus feeling the moment through conductor Faith ~ "AMAZING GRACE", beautiful hymn I sang in my choir has a wonderful lasting memories that this arrangement brings back to home ~ "LOVE THEME FROM THE GODFATHER", classic Rota score that lives through this recording, Mr. Faith gives this a new meaning ~ "BACH'S LUNCH", once again Percy gives the old masters a new paint job, Faith's arrangements take away your breath ~ gotta love it!Total Time: 66:09 on 22 Tracks ~ Collectables 7521 ~ (2/18/2003)"
THIS CD IS A MUST

"I CAN'T STOP WRITING RAVE REVIEWS ABOUT PERCY FAITH. IF THERE WERE NO OTHER GOOD SONGS ON THIS CD, "MARY QUEEN OF SCOTS" WOULD BE ENOUGH TO MAKE THIS A MUST HAVE. HOWEVER THERE ARE OTHER GREAT SONGS AS WELL. "BRIAN'S SONG", "SONG SUNG BLUE", "THE FIRST TIME EVER I SAW YOUR FACE". ALL FOUR OF THE ABOVE SONGS WERE PLAYED ON EASY LISTENING FM RADIO STATIONS BACK IN THE 70'S ND 80'S."
