Pergolesi (1710-1736) was one of the miracles of music history, creating a number of masterpieces in a life ten years shorter even than that of Mozart. In his brief twenty-six years he wrote several operas, of which La serva padrona ("The Maid Turned Mistress") is the best known. Its popularity has never waned since its premiere in 1733, thanks to delightful music and hearty comedy. It became the model for the entire Italian school of opera buffa that followed it. Soprano Federica Zanello won her first operatic singing award at the age of nineteen, took master classes with Mirella Freni, and has gone on to a major Italian career on stage, television, and recordings. Baritone Michele Govi has appeared in major opera houses in Italy and abroad, and on several opera recordings.
