Synopsis

The good humor and musical depth of veteran a cappella outfit the Persuasions make On the Good Ship Lollipop an essential kids'-music release. By way of exquisite vocalizing and well-placed asides, the quintet breathes new life into chestnuts such as "How Much Is That Doggie in the Window?" and "Teddy Bears' Picnic" while introducing a new song (producer Leib Ostrow's "A Cappella Fellas") and shedding light on the lesser-known gems "My Daddy Do, Too" and "I'm So Glad (I've Got Skin)." Finally, they turn "On Top of Spaghetti" into a doo-wop ballad classic as indelible as "In the Still of the Nite." A perfect addition to the grownup-friendly Music for Little People catalog, which also includes albums by Ladysmith Black Mambazo and Los Lobos. --Rickey Wright

CD Reviews

Wonderful, soul-stirring harmonies
10/20/1999
(5 out of 5 stars)

"I am a child care provider and have played The Persuasions' new cd for my kids. They just love it! In fact, even after music time is over, they want more and sing the songs when I'm trying to get them to quiet down. Believe me, it's not easy to keep young, active minds entertained for long. The best part? I like it, too. The harmonies are soul-stirring, like no other I've heard. Not an easy thing to pull off with adult or children's music."

(5 out of 5 stars)

"Jimmy Hayes, the bass singer of The Persuasions, is my father, it was wonderful to hear all of the songs he used to sing to me when I was younger. It was even better to be able to play them over and over again. It is a great album in general and I suggest everyone get it. Musically, the soulful sounds of the group is just as good as they were when the group used to serenade me as a little girl. The group definitely deserves all of the recognition that was given to this album and much, much, more. Love you, Daddy and I wish you much success"
I liked it so much, I bought the company

"I must admit, I don't really like children's music, so I was a bit skeptical when a friend of mine pulled out this CD. I was shocked when after only the first song I found myself not only tolerating the music, but really enjoying it. I later bought the CD for myself, and found that it only gets better each time I play it. This album is obviously great for kids, but I think that any adult who plays it will greatly enjoy it, too. Overall, it's a great album that transcends any sort of categorization."
