Synopsis
Amazon.com There's a perfectly valid reason to own this album. Unfortunately, it has little to do with the music contained on the disc. Perhaps the most notorious, terminated drummer in rock & roll history, Pete Best was, of course, the original skinman in the Beatles. This 16-song collection is culled from mid-'60s sessions by Best's post-Fab ensemble, an otherwise unremarkable unit that could only coast on the fame of its unfortunate namesake for so long. While a few tracks are appealing--the robust opener "All Aboard," the Jagger/Richards-penned "Off the Hook"--most are hampered by shoddy production and haphazard performances. "If You Can't Get Her" is second rate Herman's Hermits; the Hermits were, in turn, second rate Beatles. That said, the Pete Best Combo has earned a humble niche in Brit Invasion history. Mersey Beat aficionados, take note. Casual fans, however, won't have a hard time finding something much better than Best. --Steven Stolder |
CD ReviewsEntertaining, but not Best's best. 12/05/1998 (3 out of 5 stars) "Pete Best is famous more for his associations than his accomplishments. As Beatles historians know, he was The Beatles drummer until the band kicked him out in 1962 and replaced him with Ringo Starr. The rest, tritely said, is history. The music on the album is ok. I enjoyed it for its historical value more than its musical content, but I don't think the recordings did Best justice. Listen to the Hamburg sessions the Beatles did with Tony Sheridan...Pete Best was the better drummer." Best of The Beatles Daniel J. Nowicki | Scottsdale, AZ USA | 06/19/2001 (3 out of 5 stars) "Pete Best is still getting a bum rap. Go into it with an open mind, and you'll find that this album is not half-bad. In fact, some songs such as "The Way I Feel About You," "I'll Try Anyway" and "Keys To Your Heart" are well worth your while. The Pete Best Combo was not The Beatles, but they had a cool British "garage" sound that shouldn't be written off by snob critics. A second-rate Herman's Hermits? I'd take that as a compliment! I'd sure as heck rather listen to this album than "Abbey Road" or The White Album again." Historical Mark A., Costa | Ohio, USA | 10/15/1999 (3 out of 5 stars) "The songs are decent but Mr. Best is correct. The quality of the studio or the "combo" here does not match his work with The Beatles. Listen to his drumming on early Beatles recordings and you'll wonder ---as have millions----why they ever got that guy Ringo."
