"peter alexander has one of those smooth baritone voices that lends itself to german music, and this christmas album is one of his best. it is enjoyable to listen to even if you don't understand german, as most of the christmas music is familiar, even if the german lyrics are not. you may even learn some german along the way!
this cd originally came out in the 1970's, but has been digitalized and reissued. it includes some religious songs as well as traditional german secular christmas songs, and adaptations of american christmas songs as well.
the orchestrations are wonderful and the sound quality is typical german craftsmanship. my mother-in-law and wife are german and this album always brings tears to their eyes when we play it at christmastime, it is that good and at times, moving, such as peter's rendition of "stille nacht" (silent night).
you may want to also buy a companion album "advent mit peter alexander," also a reissue, which contains more secular and popular songs to complement the more serious ones on this album. if you have both, you will have all the beautiful german christmas music you will ever need.
so get out the stollen and kaffe, light the tannenbaum, put on this music and you will think you are in the old country for a "weisse weihnacht" (white christmas).
i definitely recommend this cd, especially if you are looking for a change of pace from the usual flood of american christmas music that you find on the shelves."
