Synopsis

Product Description
Leaving his avant-rock past (Faust, Slapp Happy, etc.) behind, Blegvad began releasing relatively straightforward, song-oriented albums in the late '80s with DOWNTIME. That album's follow-up, JUST WOKE UP, ups the ante with less experimental diversions, more stripped-down arrangements and a resultant increase of focus on Blegvad's skewed-but-hooky songwriting. DOWNTIME'S occasional sonic references to XTC are borne out here by the affecting ballad "Hell's Despite", co-written by XTC frontman Andy Partridge. Blegvad loves to turn a satirical eye toward the dark side of life, and he does so expertly on "Mad Love Vanishes", "Waste of Time" and others, but his eccentric sense of humor keeps the darkness from becoming overwhelming. JUST WOKE UP is this master songwriter's brightest moment.

Best of the bunch

"I have had this album and downtime for several years, I just recently went crazy on Amazon and bought everything else I could find. All of his songs have at least one lyrical great and many feature melodies you hum later not knowing or remembering the source. The song "Special Delivery" haunts me everyday, I absolutely love it without being able to define why. I bought my daughter the Book of Leviathan and she really likes it. From the first time I heard "Sort Of" by Slapp Happy I knew I was in for an aural treat. Just Woke Up is starker in many ways than his other releases, if you want comfortable get "King Strut" otherwise venture inside the quirkiness of this his best, in my opinion, release."
