Synopsis

Amazon.com
Scaredy-cats, collectors of kitsch, and closeted cape-wearing crusaders gather 'round: Kid Rhino's nifty Toon Tunes: Action-Packed Anthems, the companion CD to Funny-Bone Favorites, collects 36 jingles from the Saturday morning shows that split the world into neat piles of good and evil, letting us all breathe a little easier when the half-hour jig was up. Not every tune nor, for that matter, every show represented is recognizable (anybody remember "Gigantor" or "Crusader Rabbit"?) but the classics, "Scooby-Doo, Where Are You," "Mighty Mouse," and "Spiderman" among them, weave a tight web around newer, less likable anthems like "Sailor Moon" and "Tale Spin." What's best about Action-Packed Anthems, though, is that even with all the sleuths and superheroes knocking around, it manages to sneak up on us. "Hong Kong Phooey" and "Super Chicken" qualify as genuine relics, forgotten favorites in an age when we're constantly broadsided by recycled bits of childhood--which is not to say that couch-bound junior crime fighters won't get a bang out of spinning this disc, as these are themes, after all, written for kids. Only grumps and villains are likely to shrink from these songs, and theirs will be a plea--"Save me!"--not unfamiliar to the host of kooky or lovably over-earnest characters this album celebrates. --Tammy La Gorce

CD Reviews

A FEW NOTES FROM THE PRODUCER OF THIS COMPILATION ALBUM
Gregory Ehrbar | Orlando, FL | 08/07/2001
(5 out of 5 stars)

"All I can say about this collection is that it's extremely cool. For those of you who may have the earlier "Toon Tunes" releases, it is now split into two different albums: this one and another called "Funny Bone Favorites." "Action-Packed Anthems" features, for the first time ever on CD, the full-length stereo version of "Superfriends" which unitl now was extremely rare, as well as "The Amazing Chan and the Chan Clan," both conducted by the great Hoyt Curtin. Also making their CD debuts are the Rankin/Bass classic "King Kong" (performed by Al Hirt), "Darkwing Duck" and Filmation's "The Hardy Boys." Themes newly added to the "Toon Tunes" series include "The Tick," "Powerpuff Girls," "Sailor Moon," "DuckTales," "X-Men," The Mighty Hercules," Chip 'n Dale Rescue Rangers," "Astro Boy," Tale Spin," "Where On Earth is Carmen Sandiego," and "The New Adventures of Jonny Quest." All in all, we like to think it's the best collection of super cartoon themes ever included on one disc. It's a lot of fun! - Greg Ehrbar"
Toon Tunes: A blast from the past

"I just picked up my CD today and played it on the way home
from Plattsburgh. I thought it was just super great & I was
especially pleased that the theme to my NUMBER ONE SHOW OF ALL
was the first track!! It seemed really nice to hear that theme
once again. I only wish they had all of the Super Friends incarnations on it (themewise of course) especially the 1981 theme where they do the roll call of all the team members."

"Hi!
Last week, I picked up the new Toon Tunes: Action Packed Themes. I was very impressed. The renditions of the Superfriends, Charlie Chan and the Chan Clan, and Space Ghost are some of the best I've heard in a long time. Between the two CD's, over seventy classic cartoon themes are included; and I still want more. Hopefully Kid Rhino will do a third volume and include a few more lost hits like "Wheelie and the Chopper Bunch, "JabberJaw," and "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kids." It seems a shame that while Disney isn't promoting their Saturday Morning themes, Kids Rhino is.

All those tv theme afficionados that long to get nostalgic about the sixties and seventies need to pick these two CD's up. The only reason I'm not giving this five stars is it needed just about a few more "forgotten" tunes to get it up there. Please do more.
