"Just for a second imagine there is a race around the rock of Gibraltar... and that we're back in the 50s when racing cars still looked like cars. Well, sort of.
That was Peter Ustinov's fabulous idea as he went into a Manhattan studio to record this gem. He finished it in one day, without script.
All the sounds, from the farting Alfa Romeos and the other sputtering engines over the reporters (UK and US), drivers, engineers, klaxons, bands playing, all of that is Peter Ustinov: INCREDIBLE!!! (with just one or two exceptions like a hammer knocking on a metal plate)
Mr. Ustinov obviously was a fan of racing. You don't need to be one to love this: with his humor he turns the event into a treat for us all.
The accents and the different nations' peculiarities have you crumbling in your seat for laughter.
The Germans, perfect, as always, playing Wagner to get into the mood and following the advice to blow their nose exactly 7 minutes before the start of the race: saves the extra weight of the handkerchief...
The French, lacking the necessary cash to clean the cars, chain smoking, pretty girls everywhere, a little unfortunate because of national strikes. And uhm... several of their engine parts are missing...
The Italians with Commendatore Fanfani - Latin chaos, but what a sound!!!
The English, Americans, the Guest of Honor - The Duke of Edingburgh (that is, if ever he arrives) and a secretive observer from Russia...
BBFFFFRRROOOOOOM, BFFrfrrfff...frfrfr....VROOOOOMN..put! BVROOOOOM - BVROOOOM BVROOOOOOOMMMMMM I'm off - Just get it!!!"

"A real classic that will delight all who are keen on the history of motor racing. We found it just as delightfully funny as we did when we first heard it!"
