Finally a selection of Argentine music that's not entirely t
Penumbra | Atlanta, GA USA | 06/08/2008
(5 out of 5 stars)

"It's impossible to pick "the greatest songs ever" from a country or culture, but the songs chosen for this CD offer a nice selection of music from Argentina.

Naturally, tango is represented here. Sexteto Mayor performs Nuevo Tango with their rendition of "Melancólico Buenos Aires." Leopoldo Federico performs the traditional tango song, "Uno" and also gives us Piazzolla's very famous, "Libertango."

It's refreshing to hear some other types of Argentine music represented here, too. Los Nocheros specialize in folklorica, and Luciano Pereyra is noted for singing folklore and boleros.

There is another CD on Amazon The Greatest Songs Ever: Argentina - a CD with the identical name and cover art (with the cherries), but the music selection on that disc is entirely tango. As far as I can see, there is nothing on the package to distinguish them - nothing that even says Part 1 / Part 2. So check the song selections to make sure you're getting the one you want!

There are no "budget" production values here. The performers are well known. The sound has high quality recording values. The packaging, while sparse on art, is well produced - the jewel case even comes with a cardboard sleeve with matching graphics.

Highly recommended - especially if you'd like to hear some samples of Argentine music other than the ubiquitous tango and rock nacional!"
