Phil Woods has, over the years, surrounded himself with excellent musicians, but hardly ever another horn player. On this, his Quintet's second album he enlists the services of trumpet and flugelhorn supremo, Tom Harrell. Originally released in 1986, the playing is as you'd expect superb. Harrell's passionate performance seems to be voicing his determination to match Woods note for note, idea for idea.

"This japanese issued CD is one of Phil Wood's best sets. The tunes on Gratitude include originals and some standards. Tom Harrell on trumpet is as superb as Woods and wrote some of the best cuts as well. No dogs here just great small group jazz. Also the digital sound quality considering the early date 1986 is excellent - far better than most 80s digital recordings which are usually horrid."
