CD ReviewsClassic Phil Woods' Be-bop at it's best 11/22/1998 (5 out of 5 stars) "Great compositions by Phil, wonderful supporting musicians, and classic be-bop licks make this one of my favorite Phil Woods CD's. The movements are put together like a jazz symphony that works very, very well. Enjoy." Different setting, great display of Phil's playing and writi James A. Vedda | Alexandria, VA USA | 04/02/2007 (5 out of 5 stars) "This 1960 octet recording gives the impression of a transitional album, demonstrating an appreciation for what came before in the bop and cool styles while opening the door for small group jazz the way it would sound for the next 15 or 20 years. Phil composed and arranged the entire album, providing an early demonstration of his writing talents. His solo work is crisp and exciting as always, and the others in the ensemble get plenty of room to stretch as well - even the French horn. All the tracks are fine work that bears repeated listening, but if I had to pick a favorite it would be "Part V (Presto)." Another nice feature of the CD is the fold-out reproduction of the original liner notes - a wealth of information, actually large enough to read!" Stimulating David Saemann | 02/07/2008 (5 out of 5 stars) "This outing by Phil Woods and other members of the Quincy Jones band is thoroughly stimulating. The music is compact in its effect, but with much telling work for the solo instruments. Woods is outstanding, while there is beautiful work especially by the french horn and baritone sax players. The title is a reference to Stravinsky's Rite of Spring, and a reminder, as is the music, that Woods is one of Jazz's savviest and most commanding figures. Give it a listen."
