CD ReviewsFrom experimentalist to pop music composer 12/22/1998 (5 out of 5 stars) "Phillip Boa and the Voodooclub is probably Germany's most progressive and individual band of the 1980s/90s. They formed back in 1985, starting with a rather exotic music style, consisting of rock guitars, voodoo drums and B-52's like keyboards. The album "Fine Art on Silver" is their 1997 song collection, which includes the bands' most important singles, released between 1985 and 1996. The compilation contains Boa's highly melodious songs, like "Love On Sale", "Container Love" and "And Then She Kissed Her", shows his more experimental side ("Fine Art In Silver"), and provokes with rock songs like "Kill Your Ideals". With "Fiesta" Boa proves his great compositional abilities, and with "Starman" he finally dared to cover a song by one of his biggest models, David Bowie.Boa explores almost all areas of pop music, and thanks to their different producers, like Tony Visconti (T. Rex, Bowie) and Mike Spike Drake, his songs never sound the same. While his earlier stuff still has this experimental touch, the later songs sound more straight forward: Especially "Life & Crime" and "Spin My Blood", both written in 1996, with their "New Orderish" guitars can be seen as classical - but definitely not usual - pop songs.Boa managed to keep his individual music style throughout the years, and this compilation is definitely the best proof for this."
