Beautiful classical works from a master composer

"Few days ago, I returned from Germany, where among other classical Cds, I found and purchased the Franzetti piano concerto and symphony No. 1 I was, somehow, familiar with this composer's work through some earlier compositions recorded by the chamber ensemble Orquesta Nova, but I was not expecting to hear the oustanding symphonic writing which this composer produced in these two powerful compositions.The piano concerto No. 2 is a magnificent tonal composition establishing programmatic themes, one better than the other. The pensive II movement is of unequalled beauty. The soloist, pianist Allison Brewster Franzetti, obviously related to the composer, shows delicacy and amazing stamina in the last movement of the concerto. I will be trying to get some more of her recordings.The Symphony No. 1, a four- movement work reminiscent somehow of Shostakovich, but not derivative, is a product of both inspiration and craftsmanship. A tonal(sometimes atonal)work develops from a triple fugue into a lovely adagio. This elegiacal work, including a poignant waltz, a lush Adagio Lirico played by strings and a Finale, perhaps my favourite movement of the piece, is filled with counterpoint juxtaposed to brass and woodwind variations, which reaches an amazing tension toward the end of the piece, a climactic highlight very rarely experienced in 20th century music. The Janacek symphony orchestra under the baton of Dennis Burkh does justice to both works. I would have perhaps prefered more sonic ambiance in this othewise superb CD. I truly recommend it.
