Beethoven with Flair and Grace
03/01/1999
(5 out of 5 stars)

"This CD is a real "meat and potatoes" program performed by Gregory Sokolov. The Op. 7 and the Op. 101 sonata's are rarely heard masterpieces which are performed with such respect and concentration. These pieces tend to be quite busy and demanding to listen to, yet Sokolov's performance here gives the listener the time to absorb all the information without becoming overbearing. His handling of the slow movement in the Op. 7 sonata is quite atmospheric; inspiring his listener and giving one the freedom to conjure graceful images from Beethoven's imagination. He displays great technique in the the opening movement of the Op 101 sonata, considered to be one of the most difficult of Beethoven's sonata's. Then Sokolov takes command of the huge march with effortless power. The two Rondo's are brakes in a busy program while the "Rage over a lost Penny" is performed with blistering speed, accuracy, and flair; all the while exhibiting Beethoven's sometimes schitzofrenic personality. This program is a must for the hard core Beethoven music lover. It offers great examples of compositions from Beethoven's three periods and at the same time deliver rarely heard music with such control and effortless passion."
