"Bernstein is arguably at peak form with the tone poems of Russian composers. This recording of the Pictures is very well remastered to hold Bernstein's interpretation faithful. Too many times, the Pictures are recorded with not nearly enough attention paid to dynamics; the loud parts are loud and the soft parts are, too. Bernstein wisely pays much attention to the nuances of dynamic differences. Though some argue there isn't much music in the Pictures, there is a great deal of emotional evocation. This recording recognizes that. Be prepared to be involved with the orchestral "tour" and you will likely find this CD worthwhile. Toss in the two Capriccios for good measure, but listening to the entire CD in one sitting is an exercise in opposites. Take in the Pictures for the main course; come back later to sample the Capriccio after-dinner fare."
