"Pierre Schaeffer is a pioneer of electronic music and "concrete music", which is acoustically recorded sounds that are manipulated electronically. He is best known for his collaborations with the more famous Pierre Henry.
I've got a lot of great old electronic music, from Tom Dussavelt to Ussachevsky to Otto Luening to Raymond Scott, and I love it all, but this 3-cd boxset is the prize jewel of my collection. I never get tired of the haunting melodies and ethereal sounds - not cold and blippy, as you'd expect electronica to be, but warm and immediate, highly musical, playful, and downright beautiful.
If you're an afficionado of 1940s-1960s electronica/concrete music, snap this up if you can find a copy. It's rare and hard to find, but not well known so you might be able to find a deal (I found mine for only $15). If you see it, buy immediately and you WON'T regret it.
If you're not already a fan, this is an excellent place to start. Whenever I play this for friends, they inevitably wind up interested, charmed, and sometimes hypnotized. It's rare that I find a cd that I feel I can recommend to just about anyone, but this is one. Enjoy!"
