"This CD nicely shows the diverse talents of Placido Domingo -- one of the most versatile and interesting artists with whom we are fortunate to share a time period with. From grand opera to popular songs, Domingo's powerful blazing tenor is equally capable of producing flowing uninterrupted legato or warm intimate pianissimos. The CD includes several zarzuelas from the "Romanzas de Zarzuelas" CD recorded in 1988 under direction of Manuel Moreno-Buendia. That CD is now very hard to find, so it's a real treat to find Domingo's spectacular renditions here. Throughout the album one marvels how his voice remained virtually unaffected by time and numerous taxing roles. "Celeste Aida", so example, is from early 70s and Mozart's selections -- from early 90s. Yet you scarcely can tell the difference -- the high notes are consistently strong and secure, and Domingo's unmatched lower notes (he started out as a baritone) are velvety and glowing. I own many Domingo CDs and can recommend quite a few of them; this one, however, is a perfect introduction into the art of Placido, it will sure have you hooked for life."
