Synopsis
Album Description This charming instrumental acoustic album, which even the most vehement of scrooges will find hard to resist, is a collection of 33 carols performed on an assortment of instruments including the Appalachian dulcimer, banjo, mandolin, button accordion, oboe, fiddle, cello and jaw harp. From the first note, The Players find the Christmas cheer within them and vividly evoke the spirit of a rural Victorian Christmas. All the favourites are on this album, but played in an authentic way which reminds the listener of how important carols were and are in the celebration of Christmas. The Players comprise seven folk, blues and street musicians who Phil Manzanera knew and introduced to Andy Mackay, who then led the project on a `variety of reeds' and the result was this startlingly fresh and spontaneous approach to the canon of Christmas classics. It was recorded in 1987 at Manzanera's Gallery Studios. |
CD ReviewsChristmas Joy Jordan Jones | Monona, WI | 11/28/2008 (5 out of 5 stars) "The team behind this is Andy Mackay and Phil Manzanera, best known for their work with Roxy Music (Mackay wrote one of Roxy's biggest hits, "Love Is The Drug.") They have created a wonderful Holiday collection. Manzanera produces only, this is Mackay's show, and he acquits himself honourably. The album is all instrumental and sounds like what a Christmas set in a small Irish pub might sound like, warm, intimate, spontaneous and fun! Excellent musicianship all around on 33 wonderful tracks to celebrate the season." Unique Christmas album Peter M. Crockett | Elgin, Illinois USA | 11/25/2008 (5 out of 5 stars) "This actually came out in 1989. It was produced by some famous rock musician (Mike Rutherford, maybe?). It is English street musicians doing instrumental versions of classic Christmas songs. It's mellow but moving. My favorite is "In The Bleak Midwinter", with the oboe featured. Just beautiful."
